Changing Themes

I am in the process of changing the overall look and theme of the site.  I won’t be designing my own (too lazy), so I will be finding some cool Wordpress themes that are wide and stylish.  If you notice that the theme changes as often as I wash my hands (I am very compulsive [...]

A Week Gone- What Else Can I Say?

Well, it has been a week since the last post, and what can I say?  Not a lot really.  I have been busy with school and work.  As much as I would like to set aside time to post on a daily basis, sometimes it just doesn’t happen.  So, rather than ramble about my boring [...]

OALUG and Me

I have just recently accepted a new position within the OALUG.  For the longest time, I was Install Fest Coordinator.  Now, I am the Big Bad Boss.  Well, I am not really that big, although I am gaining weight, and I don’t think I am all that bad.  I don’t think I have a bossy [...]

Linux Is Fun and Stuff, but…

…setting up a Linux server, and evern worse, being the system administrator is a pain in the butt!!!111!!!11!one
Okay, here’s the thing.  I am now hosting the OALUG site on my Ubuntu web server.  No big deal.  I am hosting 3 other sites as well.  Being a web admin is not that bad.  Lately, however, I [...]

There’s Free Software and Free Software

This always brings up and interesting debate.  Do you have non-opensource software on your opensource operating system, beit Linux, BSD or whatever?
At work, we picked up a new web software development package that we hadn’t used before.  In the training, I tested my browser not only in Firefox, but in IE and Opera as well, [...]

DSL and Debian

What is the ultimate sign of a true nerd? When the nerd is carrying two Linux CDs in his wallet. That is exactly what I have in my wallet right now (well, actuall, DSL in my CDROM right now as I type). Two 210MB pocket CDs in plastic cases. One, a network intall of Debian [...]

Firefox 1.5.0.1 and A Couple of Extensions

The latest update for Firefox is version 1.5.0.1, and it was released Wednesday, the 1st.  Unfortunately, 3 extensions that reside in my Ultimate Firefox Extension List for Junkies are disabled, and they are not compatible with version 1.5.0.1.  This is really a big let down as two of the three on my list are absolute [...]

Secure Copy

This is mainly for my benefit more than anything else. I always seem to forget the syntax for using scp when in my Linux box.
To copy a local file to a remote machine:
scp local.file pthree.org:/home
To copy a remote file to my local machine:
scp pthree.org:/home/remote.file /home
You will obviously need to know the name of the [...]

Misconceptions About Community

Nothing is more frustrating, than trying to communicate with an anti-Linux person.  Espically, if such a person makes claims that there are only two types of “nerds” in the Linux camp:

The Elite
The Newbies

Within The Elite, they claim that you have:

The Slashdotters
The Arrogant
The Anti-Microsoft

Within The Newbies, the claims are laid as:

The Trolls
The Wannabes
The Annoying

Not only do [...]

I Am Having A Bad Dream

Ever have that dream?  You know.  The one where you are in fifth grade, sitting next to the girl of your dreams passing back and forth love letters, batting your eyes and day dreaming.  Or maybe you are in front of the entire class giving a speech.  You could even be in the lunch line [...]

Thunderbird and its Hiccups

I am a long time advocate of open source software. I especially enjoy the powerful applications that come from the Mozilla team. However, I have been a little annoyed with a couple Thunderbird drawbacks that have gotten under my skin.
The first deals with XML. The purpose of feeds (Atom, RSS, etc.) is [...]
