		<description>yeah, like steve said, you could just install a quick copy of ubuntu, or use the fedora live cd (dumps into memory for speed). then you just extract the stage3 tarbell onto the gentoo mount and get portage. then chroot into the gentoo mount and continue the install. then you wont waste a lot of time since you&#039;ll be functional with ubuntu/fedora.</description>

		<description>Well, it&#039;s slow to start, but doesn&#039;t have anything to do with Gentoo.  I am getting kernel panic errors, regardless of distribution.  I think it may be the fact that I am running it on a SATA drive, rather than IDE.  But I&#039;m not giving up.</description>

The thing to do, if you can, is dual boot and build your Gentoo install in the background.

Basically, the bare minimum you need to get Gentoo started is a stage3 install + MBR entry + a kernel to boot onto.  You can actually do the whole thing while chrooted, and reboot when you&#039;re finally finished. :)</description>
