Minor nitpick: you say you are running irssi and gaim on separate machines, but the prompt for both reads "aaron@achiles".  Might want to change that to make it clearer for folks who have never set up a SSH tunnel (which commands are run on client vs server, etc).</description>

Two things:
I use screen all day.  Love it, live in it.  But I run irssi in dtach.  Screen is overkill for just the detach function (you can still run the dtach session inside of a screen session on your local machine).  Just mentioning it in case you haven't seen it.

Second, I too like all my IM wrapped up in all one app.  I assume you know about bitlbee?  With it, you can put all your IM inside of irc (you did say you like console apps).</description>
