Basically, the thermal processor on the mobo has gone out, and booting into my laptop would display the error “critical CPU temerature reached. shutting down”. Regardless of booting into safe mode, or not, the error was the same.

The Ubuntu LiveCD would freeze upon boot, and never resolve, regardless of how many times I tried. I grabbed a Knoppix CD, and it booted just fine, at which point I edited my /boot/grub/menu.lst and added ‘acpi=off’ as a kernel option. From there, I was able to boot from the HDD just fine.
