About Akismet: While its *client* certainly is GPLed, its core couldn’t be further removed from the spirit of GPL. Not only do you not have the code for the server-side, but you don’t even have any idea what happens there…
“Security through obscurity” is indeed the point of Akismet… It’s hardly the way open-source works, though…
That being said, if Akismet works for you and you are happy with it, all’s well!

I used to use SK, but I switched long ago and have never been happier. Also I believe it is leaner on the server.
