In your seventh snippet, it should be :

if [[ "$terminfo[colors]” -ge 8 ]]; then

instead of (-ge instead of -gt) :

if [[ "$terminfo[colors]” -gt 8 ]]; then

One line needs some change:
autoload colors zsh/terminfo
if [[ "$terminfo[colors]” -gt 8 ]]; then
colors
fi

=>
autoload colors
zmodload zsh/terminfo
colors
This makes the color work.

You can simplify the testing and setting of the jobs expression to just:

JOBS=”%(1j. J:%j.)”

I only get black&white in both gnome-terminal and xterm (running gnome).
echo $terminfo[colors] yields 8
How could I activate colours?

Will this work for bash? If not can someone conver it? It looks really useful.
