Here’s the thing. The reason I am syndicating your feed, and the reason most others are too, is so I don’t have to visit your site, or other’s sites, to get your content. I have the feeds that I’m interested in, in my feed reader, so I don’t have to visit 100 sites to get the latest news. It comes to me. Why in the world would I want to get just a teaser of the content, and visit your page? Hungry for ad clicks? Want page rank? Looking for site traffic? What?

So, if you publish only descriptions, or summaries in your feeds, chances are, I won’t be reading your blog. It’s the #1 turnoff for me, and I know, for plenty others. Give me the FULL content. I’m not interested in wasting my time following links going to pages.

Although I am already familiar with the technology, and even the differences between Atom and RSS, I still enjoyed the video. I could find this handy to show to my parents or siblings, as when I try explaining new technology, I seem to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

I was hoping that I would come across some real good feeds from those on a couple planets. I was in the hunt for tech/geek/Linux/FLOSS feeds. I found a few, and I’m happy with the results thus far, even though, I’m still very much on the hunt for good RSS reading.

But, first things first. I am no longer using Liferea for my RSS reader. There are a couple of reasons for this, which are just my opinion. First, I prefer web-based applications to installed binaries in just about every case. If I can reduce the memory consumption on my machine, and place it on some centralized server, I’m all over it. Second, synchronizing my feeds between multiple computers is a pain with Liferea, and I’m sure most other RSS apps. If I add feeds while at work, then I need to make sure that I export the feeds, so I can import them into my feedreader at home. If I forget, then I seem to build a completely different list at home than I do at work, and that’s annoying.

Really, that’s it. So, I switched to Bloglines for my feed reading. First, being a web developer, I already have my browser open testing my app. Second, the ability to add new feeds, and be able to read them regardless of my location is sweet. No more headaches. Let me run over a brief reason why I read the feeds that I do:

  • Blog of Helios: Linux blog- probably the best there is. Really good stuff.
  • Command Line Warriors: Overall, good tech related articles.
  • Joey Day: Good friend of mine with tech, spiritual, and other topics. Creator of the Home Star Runner wiki, also.
  • On My Desk: I always find it fun to see others desks, and what they are doing professionally.
  • EFF: Need I say more?
  • This is Broken: Fun various problems in the advertising, marketing, manufacturing, etc, arenas. Good laughs.
  • Compiler: Wired blog about software and software-based services. Good reading.
  • Cult of Mac: Another Wired blog about everything Apple.
  • Epicinter: Yet another Wired blog about industry leaders, including Apple, Microsoft, Sun, IBM, etc.
  • Gizmodo: Gadget galore! Support the underdog, as my boss says. :)
  • Techdirt: What Slashdot used to be, and what it should be, but currently isn’t. My favorite feed.
  • The Planets: As found in their name, posts from blogs about the specified topics.

Time for a game. Because I’m starting the game, I’m going to set the rules.

This is a blogging tag game, where, if tagged in a blog post, you must post as well. In your blog post, you must provide a trackback ping to the post that tagged you (a permalink to the post). You can only tag 2 people. For example, if I were to tag Alice and Bob, then Alice must post tagging two more people, but also put a link to my post tagging her. Same with Bob. In essence, the goal is to create an exponentially growing tree, with me at the trunk tagging two, then each of those tagging two more, and so on. Yet, regardless of where you are in the tree, you can trace the links back and forth seeing what others have posted. Makes sense? Okay. Let’s start.

I’m always in the lookout for new RSS feeds to read related to technology, Linux, Ubuntu, programming, technocrats and other things similar. Lately, I’ve been growing tired of my feeds, so I thought I would go out on the lookout for new feeds to put in my RSS reader. So, in this game, an RSS posting game, if you’re tagged, post your subscribed feed list in some XML-based clear text format. So, here is my list, in OPML format, of the feeds that I subscribe to.

As you can see, most are planets, and I don’t have very many feeds. I have also taken out a few feeds that were driving me nuts, mainly, Digg and Slashdot. So, with that said:
